Dr. Banner is a scientist known for being the one who will encode Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics into the AIs Socrates and Platon. His life is the key to stopping the AI rebellion before it even begins. Originally, a time traveler named Nagashima tried to save him, but Banner died in that timeline. However, when Rei travels to the past to save Banner's life, he succeeds in preventing his death. By saving him, Rei effectively changes the destiny of mankind and prevents the catastrophic future ruled by the AIs.
