She is a member of the Rohingya people, an oppressed Muslim ethnic group residing in Myanmar and Bangladesh. After military troops killed her family, she was sold as a sex slave. She was shot while trying to escape but was rescued from death by her would-be teacher and given the name 'Mao Mao'.
